Idaho’s very first Passive House Open for Technical Viewing January 12-14

Fairfield, Idaho-Victor Weber of the ZEPHER Group announced today the dates of January 12-14 for a technical open house of the Passive House retrofit project located in the old township of Soldier, ID.

The open house will demonstrate the properties of the 1910 farmhouse, which permit it to use 90% less heating energy, and up to 70% less total energy. The guts of its super-insulated, airtight shell will be exposed, allowing attendees to see the framing, insulation and air sealing techniques employed. The home’s mechanical systems will be operational, including its triple pane Krypton filled windows, a 93% efficient heat recovery ventilation system, and its solar thermal heat storage system designed to provide the majority of the heat the structure does not generate on its own. Viewers will experience the superior indoor air quality wrought by the ventilation system’s constant stream of fresh air, and will notice the even thermal comfort throughout the structure from the moment they enter.

This open house will benefit architects, builders, designers and the general public desiring to learn more about the future of building science-the Passive House Standard, the most rigorous building energy standard in the world. The open house will run each day from 10 am to 5 pm. Find details at or call 208 764-2820. The ZEPHER Group pleased to offer scheduled field trips for school groups. Interested parties should call to arrange a date and time.

The End

No Furnace? No worries...

No Furnace? No Worries, 1910 Farmhouse to prove how efficient a Passive House can be.

Fairfield, Idaho-Victor Weber of the ZEPHER Group announced today the final stages of their Passive House retrofit project in Fairfield, Idaho, a town known to have record low temperatures during its long winters.  The shocking thing about this house in Fairfield is that there will be no furnace or central heating system.

When complete, the 1910 farmhouse will use 90% less energy to heat, and up to 70% less total energy. Where will the heat come from?  The home will work to minimize heat loss via its super-insulated, airtight shell.  Much of the remaining heat requirement will be gathered passively via south facing windows, solar thermal panels, and an underground heat exchange ventilation system.  The 94% efficient heat recovery of the ventilation not only retains heat, but yields a constant stream of fresh air resulting in superior indoor air quality year round.  You may have heard the saying “you can heat a passive house with a hair dryer”. There is a lot of truth to that saying.

The ZEPHER Group provided the overall design on the Fairfield  project, which will be the first Certified Passive HouseTM in Idaho, while Eco Construction Inc, a local Camas County business, is lead builder.

If you would like to see the construction details of the Fairfield Retrofit project, an open house will be held later this Fall.  The open house will benefit architects, builders, and homeowners who desire to know more about the building science behind the Passive House Standard, the most rigorous building standard in the world.
